In 2009 Nehlsen started its new waste treatment and management businesses in Tunisia. Since November 2009  Nehlsen International has been operating the center for treatment of industrial hazardous waste in Jradou, Tunisia. It is the first and the only center of its kind in Africa and the Middle East.

The center incorporates the following:

• Advanced laboratory for waste analysis and quality control
• Hazardous solid waste treatment (stabilization & solidification) with a  capacity of 40 000 tonnes per year
• Hazardous liquid waste treatment (physical & chemical treatment, PCT) with a capacity of 25 000 tonnes per year 
• Landfill for disposal of stabilized solid waste
• Intermediate/temporary storage for the management of non-treatable waste.

The centers total reception and treatment capacity is ca. 90.000 tonnes/a.

Within 3 months Nehlsen recruited and trained 45 Tunisian employees (engineers, chemists, IT specialists, transport personnel etc) for operation, service and maintenance of the various treatment plants contained within the center.

Furthermore Nehlsen has started several research projects cooperating with universities, colleges and industrial partners for valorization and recycling of waste. Nehlsen is pleased to start its international activities in the field of hazardous waste remediation in Tunisia and is looking forward to extending its business to further countries of the Arab World.
